Situated fifteen minutes from the sea and forty minutes from the nearest ski resort, Valbonne is an ancient Provencal village with its origin dating to the 16th century. Located in south-east Provence, 10 km from Cannes, Valbonne is just a stone’s throw from the leading European Technology and Science Park in Sophia Antipolis. With its numerous architectural highlights and a convenient location at the crossroads of the Alpes-Maritimes, the city offers plenty of possibilities for cultural discovery and outdoor activities.
Unlike most medieval Provencal villages, Valbonne’s original feature is its unique design of the streets. Set by the monks of Lerins, the city is built in a grid pattern with streets intersecting at right angles.
The best way to absorb the atmosphere of the old town is to stroll through its ancient streets with historic pastel houses. Want to relax your feet and refresh on a hot day? Have a glass of wine on one of the sunny terraces of cosy restaurants based around the Place des Arcades, busy square dating to the 17th century.
If you are into historical heritage, you might like Romanesque abbey church from the 12th century, which is considered as a classic example of Chalaisien architecture. From 1993, the Abbey of Valbonne houses local heritage Museum displaying 2,000 exhibits - old furniture, tools, utensils and clothes - from past and recent times.

Bring an unusual gift from the market
Local cheese and wine from Servan grapes, perfume from Grasse, and olive oil from Opio...Make sure you don’t miss the traditional market! All kinds of stall holders sprawl their way not just in one place but throughout the village every Friday morning. You will find everything from artists' paintings, hand-painted ceramics, jewellery, clothing, lavender cosmetics.
As well as an excellent selection of seasonal fruits and vegetables, high-quality olive oils, local spices, sausages, yummy cheeses and great tapenades. It's a great way to taste all the amazing local products and practice your French by chatting with the seller; you can even try to bargain and get a better price! Remember that a smile and basic French such a “bonjour”, “merci” and “au revoir” can make a big difference while talking with the locals. The best way to relax after the market is to have a lunch in one of the cosy restaurants located near the square.
If you prefer exploring outside the city walls, you will find numerous occasions to spend some time in a wonderful environment. Within an easy drive, you'll enjoy the pleasures of the beach as well as canyoning, climbing and a superb walk in the Mercantour national park.
