Artis Nimanis (1978) is a contemporary magician who turns glass into unique artworks and thus surprises people all over the world.

Artis' interest in glass began as a child when he would study icicles. He was fascinated by the breaking light, fluidity, clarity, and cleanness of frozen water. It captivated him and eventually motivated to create something similar with his own hands – capture the wonder of nature in an instant.

Artis Nimanis is one of the best-known Latvian glass artists and designers. His art has appeared in both solo and group exhibitions all over the world, including Europe, the USA, Russia, China, Mexico and Japan. Nimanis' experimentation with the latest technologies in glass blowing has won him praise within the contemporary art world and his unique style gives each one of his pieces an individual “personality”. Figurative characteristics, intertwined with metaphorical interpretations of life and existence, Nimanis' ideas grasp at something unknown. He tries to reveal the origins of the universe, creation, nature and sexual energy, highlighting them with the aesthetics of light, graphic lines and a rhythmic glare on the surface of the glass.

The artist’s special technique – when the glass is coated with a very thin layer of metal (silver, gold, copper, stainless steel) while placed in a vacuum chamber - gives the glass a mirror effect and transcendental quality. The principle of reflection has long been an important part of the development of the human mind and a symbol of self- knowledge. Nimanis is interested in the dual nature of the mirror and the way we interact with reflections. For him, the mirror replicates reality but remains a door to a new reality. The reflection of the environment where an artwork is placed in grants it a magical quality allowing the viewer to enter into the unknown and examine that, which we can see with our eyes, as well as that, which we can no longer see. Thus, the viewer may join in an illusory game with the object.
